We welcome around 50 international volunteers each year, ranging from young vets with a couple of years' experience to veteran vets with their own practice and 35 years of surgeries under their belts. Young or old, we love all our volunteers and below are a few of the nice comments they've left us after their visit.

"Best 8 weeks ever, Tana is excellent at what she does and is keen to listen to feedback from vets and does everything in her power to make MAWS work which it does. It makes such a difference having a good dog handler like KC at the clinic, this makes the day a lot easier and less stressful! All the handbooks are in great detail and really prepare you for life in Maun. Really great charity and we were spoilt when we were there! Definitely coming back."

"Just finished my 3 weeks at MAWS. Had a great time again. Could you please book me in for 3 or 4 weeks for next year?"

"I had a great time working at MAWS and would love to come back again some time!"

"Sherisse and I made it home to Canada yesterday. I wanted to thank you for your excellent organizing. MAWS is a very special group and my experience this time was even more impactful than the first time. The work MAWS is doing is so important and the hospitality brings it over the top. I know it's a year away but I want to tentatively book for next February [...] February was a great month to be there and I miss it already."

"We had two productive weeks and both Lauren and I really enjoyed it. Just got back home this morning – to cold weather... Thanks again to all of you for making this a memorable experience for us and we really admire your hard work!"

"All the MAWS volunteers are absolutely fantastic and I was astounded at their energy to run the clinic, do fundraising and host volunteers all year round. Tana also co-coordinated with the SPCA in Kasane and we travelled 600km to set up an outreach clinic there for a week. Outreach meant a mobile clinic set up outside and long days to help as many people as we could in our short visit. Again I was overwhelmed by the dedication of the volunteers [...] I left with a feeling of privilege to work with such a great organization and a great feeling of satisfaction at my small part in helping them achieve their goals."

"I had spent 5 months in South Africa volunteering and was supposed to be going on to another project until it fell through. I had no other option but to find another voluntary placement as I wasn’t ready to go home! I luckily managed to find MAWS online and saw they were looking for a nurse. I emailed immediately and was accepted onto the project. This was very out of my comfort zone and was fairly apprehensive at first, but as soon as I arrived I could tell it was going to be great and turned out to be the best decision I have ever made!

I have had the most fantastic three months with MAWS and I couldn’t recommend it enough. As soon as I arrived everybody was lovely, the accommodation was way above what I was expecting, with lovely food provided and two lovely cottage dogs! The clinic is perfect, it is fairly basic, but is well stocked and has pretty much everything you need. If something was missing, just ask and it appears!

Tana and the rest of the committee were great and so helpful and if there was ever a problem, we just called and it would be sorted immediately. The local guys at the clinic were also fab, their skills and handling of the dogs was amazing and I actually learnt a few tips from them!

We worked pretty hard getting all the dogs neutered by early afternoon, but was such a rewarding feeling knowing what a difference we are making. The African dogs were such lovely dogs and considering I am normally a 'cat' person, I am now a fully fledged ‘African dog' girl! The outreach projects to local villages was great fun also, seeing a completely different side to 'local life'.
The way the volunteers were treated was fantastic, we were really looked after and being a volunteer, that is really appreciated. I was lucky enough to also get out and see some of the beautiful wildlife whilst there, which was amazing.

I can’t thank MAWS enough for letting me volunteer with them and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to do some volunteer work. I am so glad my second project fell through as otherwise I don’t think I would have taken that step and gone to Botswana, but after such a fantastic experience, I can’t wait to return!"

“I spent 5 weeks working with MAWS [...] it was my first volunteer trip and a great experience! Even though we did quite a fair amount of work, it still felt like a holiday to me and we had plenty of time to enjoy Maun and the hot weather, while it was icy cold in Europe. If there were no extra patients coming in in the afternoon, we spent lazy afternoons relaxing, reading a book or jumping into Mervyn’s pool to cool down. In the evenings we watched the sunset over the river at one of the many lodges accompanied by a sundowner.

The organisation made it a priority to look after the volunteers very well [...] just noticing how my surgery times decreased and how my technique and skills improved over the 5 weeks, made the trip worthwhile.

I dearly recommend this trip to anyone who would like to explore Botswana and its wildlife or who just wants to do some worthwhile work while taking a break from the often hectic everyday life of private practice back home.”

"Just a quick note to say I’ve arrived back in NZ safely. Please extend my huge thanks to Tana and the team at MAWS for an incredible time in Maun. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I had an amazing time. Thanks so much for the opportunity."

"We have just arrived back in the UK and wanted to drop a line to say thanks so much for everything you did for us while we were in Maun in August. We had a fantastic time (a very good introduction to volunteer work for us) and are very keen to do more in the future."

"Hope all is well over there! We are still in awe of our visit to Africa, thank you so much to everyone at MAWS for looking after us so well during our stay."
     Kate G January 2012

"I just wanted to say thank you to MAWS for a wonderful trip. The whole thing was really enjoyable and I had a lot of fun."
     Caroline J September 2011

"The clinic is very well set up with separate prep and operating tables. It was all very clean and tidy with kits already made up and set out and a good selection of suture materials (some are bought by the charity and some are donated)... I had a very enjoyable time and look forward to returning again in the future."
