Prevent needless suffering

What we do

All of our Maun-based veterinary work is conducted from our purpose built clinic on Palmer Street, between Exit 9 on the Disaneng Road and the Thamalakane River. The clinic comprises 58 square metres of operating facilities and can accommodate up to four veterinarians at any one time. The clinic also features four large external holding pens and a large fenced pen where individual cages/kennels can be kept safely.

During our outreach campaigns we operate wherever we can. Often this is in the shade of a tree in the middle of the bush, and our overseas volunteers are frequently surprised by rain showers, mosquito attacks and even curious wildlife during surgery!

Cats

Maun has a large population of feral cats, and we work with local people and businesses to trap feral cats on their property, neuter and vaccinate them, and return them to the place where they were first found. Neutering is kinder than euthanasia, ensures less territorial fighting, plus a healthy cat will protect an area from vermin. Feral cats are too wild to be homed, but our campaign ensures that they do not breed and the incidence of disease is reduced.

Dogs

Botswana is home to a large number of people who are on extremely low incomes. This understandably means that their financial priorities are geared towards food and shelter for humans, not dogs. Our local focus is to work with the villagers to sterilise and vaccinate these dogs to reduce breeding and eliminate the outbreak and transmission of disease. We also educate the villagers as to the benefits and cost of responsible dog ownership and the importance of sterilisation.

Livestock

Maun's donkeys, horses, cattle and goats are often left to roam free, a practise which results in frequent road accidents and a lack of veterinary treatment. Donkeys are also hobbled to limit their roaming, and over-zealous binding causes numerous problems. We are limited as to how much we can help livestock as laws prevent us from too much interference, however well-meaning. Regardless, we attend and treat injured livestock and call the police to euthanise badly-injured animals.
